The Self-Empowered Woman: 17 Characteristics of High Achievers

The Self-Empowered Woman explores and examines the elements that contribute to the making of a high-achieving woman's life. For each of the 17 chapters there are mini-biographies of four women who exemplify the trait under discussion, and one of the four has been personally interviewed by the author. Information on the other three has been gathered from biographies, autobiographies and secondary-source research material. Each chapter ends with five exercises designed to help the reader learn how to incorporate the trait into her own life. Following that is a list of ten additional women whose lives have also incorporated that chapter's specific trait. The accomplished women profiled in the book - from astronauts to actresses - come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds (Black, Anglo, Asian, and Hispanic), talents, nationalities, and levels of achievement.

5Great Fan of Marilyn Murray Willison's Work!  Dec 19, 2010
By Laura Lynch
I happen to be a Great fan of Marilyn Murray Willison's work.
I have read every book she has written, every newspaper article in my paper, every blog that she has posted. [...]
I find that Marilyn writing technique draws me into whatever topic she is speaking about. She has unique perspectives that I find interesting and thought provoking.

I have also gotten the great pleasure of witnessing her speak at an engagement where again she did a phenomenal job of catching the attention and interest of everyone in her audience, both women and men, and keeping it right through the end.

The Self-Empowered Woman is you, me and every other woman, young and old, you know. It's about Women who reach for their dreams no matter what challenge crosses their path. It's about inspiring ourselves to take our hopes and dreams and goals to the next level. It's about reading stories of accomplished women who have succeeded before us and inspire us. It's about recognizing that YES WE DO have better selves and the abilities to put our best selves forward to succeed at whatever We choose to do.
Nike summoned it up.... Just do it. Marilyn writes why we can! Thanks, Marilyn.

5Required Reading (and not JUST for women)!  Sep 03, 2009
By Norfolk_Enchants
I was more than amazed when I began to leaf through this book, as it immediately began to speak to me on many levels, especially as I am someone who is both an uber-skeptic but also someone who normally scoffs at this book genre. Another reason that I assumed that I wouldn't much care for this book is because I am also of the male persuasion, and so I was doubly intrigued to find myself thoroughly engrossed in this lucid; intelligent; incisive and amusing offering from Marilyn Murray Willison.
Ms. Willison writes with passion, empathy and deep understanding about the formative lives of the sixty-eight women in this her sixth and latest book; indeed it becomes obvious to the reader that, in fact, Ms. Willison probably deserves to be one of the subjects of her own excellent book. The 280 odd pages that make up 'The Self-empowered Woman' are, we learn from the introduction, the distillation of a life's work that is also its subtitle: '17 Characteristics of High Achievers'- I am only amazed that she managed to cram it all into one book! This alone, by any definition, is a tour de force!
In a nutshell, the book investigates and defines the main characteristics and events that have helped to shape the development of a representative cross-section of the female movers and shakers on this planet- the "unification theory" of female self-empowerment.

Required reading.

5Courage and tenacity  Sep 24, 2009
By Joan H. Faubion "BrainGain"
If all work is a self portrait, this lyrical analysis of female achievement is a distinctive tribute to the author's own courageous journey. She understands well that all the flowers of all the tomorrows are hidden inside the seeds of today -- particularly when today presents challenges or disappointments. Her discernment of this paradox is the reason this book is so powerful.

The use of questions at the end of each chapter is masterfully designed to evoke in each reader fresh kernals of truth about the power of choice. Accordingly, Marilyn knows well that setbacks are not the end of the story unless one fails to return the serve!

The tapestry she weaves about high achieving women is a must read for anyone interested in "the strive to overcome" against all odds. Finally, "releasing the past" is artfully presented as the venue through which our weights becoming our wings...

5Loved Every Chapter  Apr 08, 2010
By S. Cooper "Sunshine Reader"
Thank you Marilyn Murray Willison for writing such an insightful book on High Achieving Women. I loved your style of writing, your wisdom and humor. My favorite line from the book is on page 94, " All great achievers have an absolute belief that their vision will manifest. They know without any doubt that their dreams will come true". Very powerful for a self employed entrepreneur like myself. The book spoke to me and I read it in 2 days.

I highly recommend this book for all the women in your circle. I purchased 5 copies for dear friends and have had very positive comments from them. In these tough economic times, we need to hear success stories from women of all backgrounds to help us focus on our success and our personal high achieving characteristics.

5So much food for thought....  Feb 01, 2010
By Hilary Gauntt
Non-fiction self help books don't usually call to me...I will slog through them if I feel I need the information, but it takes me forever to finish them. Not so with this book. The glimpse into the lives of such a variety of interesting women and the 17 different keys to their success really keeps you turning the pages. I am impressed that the author has actually met or interviewed so many of them. I am involved with a book club for incarcerated teen girls, and I think this book with the exercises at the end of each chapter would give the girls some concrete examples about how to move their lives forward. Well done!
