"The Shimmering Gate" begins when Gatherer, a member of a race of 10-foot tall Desert Striders who can make their own water and live on a desert world, is out doing his job. Surprisingly, his job is to gather food for the tribe. While he is gathering, he finds the body of a small man who is a dwarf named Zarn. In addition to much juicy meat, he is carrying a ring and a crystal pendant. Simultaneously, Rhys, Michael and Ashley are staying in the Kingdom of the Pinns, a race of Humans who populate the world of Portalia along with a mix of Centaurs, Dwarves and several races of Elves. Rhys and friends are from Earth, but in the first book "The Spider Gem," they were transported from Earth through the Portals to Portalia. Now in their quest to return to Earth, they decide to accompany some of the Pinns on a journey to defeat the Warlock, Weldrock. They must seek the help of the Sea Elves at the City of Seahome.
Later, when Gatherer is gathering in the desert, there is a flash of blue light and he finds himself in the middle of a city of Centaurs in Portalia. Because of the ring he is wearing, he is redirected to Pinnhome only to discover that the Wizard who could have sent him home through a twist of fate has disappeared.
Taff Lovesey shines once again in the second book of the "Portal Chronicles" which is even better than the first, but be sure to read "The Spider Gem." "The Shimmering Gate" is a real page turner. As soon as I started reading, it was practically glued to my fingers. The booked grabbed me, pulled me in and kept me in until the last page. This book is for ages 11 and up who enjoy fantasy. "The Shimmering Gate" is original and surprising with a complex but ingenious plot and great imagery and voice.
Book received at no charge.
