Extremely entertaining! Oct 02, 2006
By Connie Kohler The Sooty Man is the second of Steven Rudd's novels about the forensic psychiatrist, Chris Van Zant. In the first novel, Midnight Red, Chris was introduced as a young woman with a special talent for understanding the deviant mind. In The Sooty Man, her personality is further developed as she works on a case of a ten year old murder and the elusive forest dweller who is presumed to be the murderer. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Dr. Rudd has developed a main character who I look forward to meeting again.

The detective for the twenty-first century. Mar 19, 2007
By Frank R. Freemon The greatest detective of the nineteenth century was Sherlock Holmes. The twentieth century saw a series of detectives, men such as Sam Spade and Christopher Marlowe. The twenty-first century has finally produced a detective of this caliber. Kris Van Zant is a medical doctor, a forensic psychiatrist, who knows the evil that exists in the human mind. She is, like most Americans, pathologically friendly; "Call me Kris, everybody does." She is not without weaknesses; flying in a helicopter produces a panic attack. But her expertise, mixed with boldness and verve, makes her the leading detective to appear in the twenty-first century so far. Holmes was from London and the twentieth century detectives from California, but the new center for the detection of evil is the heart of old Dixie, Georgia and Alabama. The Sooty Man is a great story that showcases the talent of this newest leading detective.
