Compelling Historical Fiction Dec 14, 2009
By Brenda Copeland
"elementary librarian"
Red Eye by Robert Trout is compelling historical fiction that is sure to please not only Civil War buffs but those horse lovers as well. The characters are well developed and events unfold in a believable sequence as the reader journeys with Red Eye through the war and beyond. Mr. Trout is able to tie into the time frame of the civil war in an accurate and thought provoking way. The plot builds and keeps the reader turing the pages to the story climax. The cover page art is awesome and eye catching. It should draw kids to open the book. Red Eye would be a great addition to any library collection. Keep those young adult fiction coming!!! Well done!!!

History for the young in a rich and well written book Dec 04, 2009
By Patricia Mr. Trout has brought his extensive knowledge of history to tell a meaningful story of a boy and a horse. History is carefully woven throughout the story but does not overwhelm the tale told about a boy and his love for Red Eye. It tells about how the boy meets the horse when both are young and progresses through the experiences of both. It is told through the eyes of James which enables the reader to follow the lives of both in a clear and enjoyable fashion. The history is skillfully interwoven to take the reader through the history of our country before, during and after the Civil War.
This book appeals to both boys and girls, those interested in history and those who love horses. It is a book that can be read aloud by parents or can be read by the child alone.
The book shows how Mr. Trout is able to hold the attention of the young, making them want to read the next page. I would highly recommend this book as it is well written and it it is a tale of life in a difficult period of our history.
Well done, Mr. Trout.
