The Sultan's Helmsman

September 1494 – Amid the chaos of Charles VIII’s devastating invasion of Renaissance Italy, a squadron of Turkish galleys slips out of Istanbul under cover of night, and disappears west into the October storms. Aboard are three Turkish diplomats, a papal nuncio, and a fortune in gold ducats. The unforeseen consequences of their dangerous mission threaten to destabilize the papacy and alter the military alliances of Europe. A tale of seagoing adventure and actual historical events, The Sultan’s Helmsman is also a philosophical novel exploring eastern and western ways of thought. Kachak -- the helmsman of the Turkish galley White Falcon -- is a fugitive from war-torn Europe who has been educated at the elite Ottoman palace school. When the west attempts to reclaim him, he must rely on his training, and on the loyalty of his friends, to make himself the person of his own choosing.

4The Sun Rises from the East  Jan 16, 2010
By Philip B. Persinger
Robert Colburn's book succeeds on multiple levels. At its core it is a great "Ripping Yarn" for schoolboys and adults alike. But it is so much more. It is not set in exotic lands as much as focused into the heart and soul of different cultures.

The narrator's voice is timeless, sincere and direct. He shares the charms and challenges of a most non-Western mindset. In fact, the "foreign" land he flees to from the chaos and barbarism of the West is so enlightened that he needs to escape the clutches of his native land when they try to "save" him from the infidel that was his salvation.

The writing is solid and confident. The seamanship is dead on. The reader can "read" the wind force and direction from the texture of the water along with the helmsman.

The great power and force in the book is how successful Colburn is in viewing the great Western Renaissance through Eastern eyes and visiting a culture which did not need to be reborn because it never died.

This book is a delight and unexpected. The author is courageous to take on a subject which is not a guaranteed success in our polarized times.
