The Tourist: Who's Too Dangerous For Belize

The Tourist Who’s Too Dangerous for Belize by Dean Fortune DeMarks is a landmine of action and an explosion of truth. This new author makes a bold entrance into travel and adventure writing as he tells his story of setting out to find a simpler life for himself and his family. As a land developer for small resorts, his sights are on the Placencia Peninsula in Southern Belize, a pretty little piece of paradise, until he inadvertently becomes the target of an extortion conspiracy led by the National Police of Belize. He will be forced to defend himself and his family, from constant attacks by drug smugglers, scam artists, and crooked politicians. As the drama escalates, he will learn that paradise can be a much forbidden place.

1Racist and Appalling  Aug 31, 2009
By booksandbelize
Can we say "racist?" "Uncivilized Garifuna natives?" In 2001, UNESCO proclaimed the language, dance and music of the Garifuna as "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity." For Mr. DeMarks sake, I hope he never sets foot in Belize again, especially in Seine Bight Village, where he was the author of his own downfall and final expulsion from Belize. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For a good book about Belize, try The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw.

1Sensationalism selling at Amazon as Travel Book  Sep 07, 2009
By SuzyQ Belize
As any intelligent reader understands, sensationalism sells. That is the mode of our culture. How unfortunate that this man, DeMarks, is now able to capitalize on his failure in Belize; very much like an inmate selling the story of his raping spree. Only in this case, DeMarks is not locked in - he is locked out(of Belize) and apparently very bitter. I am surprised at the biased tone of Amazon's editorial review. They are either getting desperate for income or someone is asleep at the wheel. I've been a fairly good repeat customer of Amazon.com - but as long as this book remains with the editorial review they have published, my purchasing from Amazon will cease. There is power in that as well.

I won't buy nor read this trash and hopefully you won't either. It is nothing but pure slander against an entire culture that DeMarks was not able to matriculate in.

1About this author:  Aug 31, 2009
By B. Montgomery "conservation crusader"
Reprinted from the March 14th 2008 Amandala Newspaper, Belize:

Dean De Marks, 50, deported for M112 C-4 explosives

New Jersey, U.S.A. insurance agent Dean De Marks, 50, was deported Friday morning to Houston, Texas by order of Immigration and National Security Minister Hon. Carlos Perdomo.

De Marks, who had been planning to build condominiums at Seine Bight Village, had his home searched by police on February 26. The discovery of 2 blocks of M112 C-4 explosive, a detonator, and a silver and black 9mm pistol caused police to arrest and charge him.

He was eventually bailed for $10,000, but the case took on national significance when it was learned that Seine Bight residents alleged, on morning talk-shows, that De Marks had threatened to blow up their tiny village.

De Marks had been scheduled to return to court on April 8, but Minister Perdomo said he was taking no chances with the possibility that De Marks might act on those alleged threats.

According to the Minister, US Marshals had been informed and were waiting for De Marks on his return to the United States.

1homegrown bigot/anarchist writes novel  Sep 04, 2009
By Jose Antonio Sanchez "j sanchez"
The man has been deported for having explosives. Garifuna culture is considered by UNESCO as World Heritage. ANd for Amazon to refer to Garifuna people as "untrained and uncivilized" is racist and discriminatory. In fact Andy Palacio, a Garifuna, is listed as Number one in Amazon's top 100 World Music Albums of All time. How could a Garifuna accomplish that while being "untrained and uncivilized." This work is garbage, and Amazon should remove it and the "about the author" because it is discriminatory. His book needs to be deported from amazon as well. As a customer of Amazon, i would appreciate an immediate removal. Jose Sanchez, Belizean.
