5 if you are a tree nut, 2 if you are a casual tree looker Feb 07, 2012

"Middle Fork Giants"
Susan McDougal wrote an interesting book that mashes together a love for Mt. Rainier with a treatise on Washington trees. She has a lot of good information on trees and I learned quite a bit from her. It is just organized in a funny way. I get the impression this is "the book she wanted to write" and was more an outlet for her love for the park than an organized book on trees. If this were a general review, I would give it two stars for that.
But this is not a general book. This is a book for people who are reading every book on trees. This is a book for someone who has read both other books with similar titles on the trees of Mt. Rainier. This is a book for someone who is not a forester but wants to understand the place trees play in a northwest ecosystem. It is in plain language and explains it all. If you read the whole book.
And that is the conundrum of this book. If you are a casual tree nut who wants to learn more about trees without going back to college, this is a good book. If you just want to look up tree facts, or learn a little, I don't think you will like this book. If you are a forester or forestry student. I don't think you will like it.
BTW: There is one other type of person who will probably appreciate this book, the Mount Rainier NP nut. But you probably already knew that.
