By W. Gross If you've ever been in an academic environment, and watched self-satisfied professors pat each other on the back as they trade claptrap back and forth, then this book will look very familiar. One reviewer on the back cover claims it considers "some of the most important questions we can ever ask, especially about God, eschatology and the relationship of mind to the brain..." If only that were true. There is no questioning, no ambivalence, no awe or wonder - no science. Instead, it is an opinionated advocacy paper, a condescending diatribe. It misstates most of the viewpoints coming from the mouths of its allegedly historical characters: Jehovah, prosecuted by Voltaire (without the wit), defended by the archangels Michael and Gabriel (without the biblical text), calling as witnesses Darwin, Freud, Crick, Nietzsche, Marx, Einstein, Huxley, Mahomet, Jesus, Machiavelli, and Churchill. If their own words had been used, it might have been interesting; but of course it is the author's own puppeteer voice, variously coming from the lips of his straw men to make his point. And what is his point? Frankly, it's hard to say, but I think it's that he is a god among gods, and you're a fool. Don't waste your money. There are no insights here.
