1938 - VIEWED FROM 2008 Nov 24, 2009 Reichert went through a poetic period in his late teens and the German version of these poems are valuable period pieces, reflecting his age, their age and the horrific events of the period.I don't know enough about German literature to evaluate the poems. I enjoyed reading them: they seemed fresh and had an immediacy which was meaningful to one of similar age and background to the author.
The English translations are less valuable. Reichert and a friend did a number of the translations and because he was the author he felt free to take quite some liberties to convey the spirit, but - sadly - the English versions lack the quality of the originals. The remaining poems are formal, technical translations, and are precisely that: with all the disadvantages and benefits which one would expect.
I would commend this book for the German texts in particular as wonderfully bringing the period to life.
