The Winds of October

An experienced field intelligence agent Major Kenneth Hall is not, so shouldn't have "picked up" the attractive Greek girl called Anna at the American Club swimming pool outside Athens in the late summer of 1949. Newly assigned in war-ravaged Greece, he's a lonely bachelor. They make a supper date. When he arrives at her apartment near the city center the handsome woman who greets him denies any knowledge of her. Aided by pretty Karen Dunne, his secretary in the shadowy, special intelligence section of the Joint U.S. Military Aid Group, they begin a spare-time search for the girl -- and run headlong into murder, kidnapping, treachery, international intrigue and a threat to the Free World. If the puzzling plot code named Miniver Cheevie's Cat can be foiled and Anna found before the Greek's national holiday on October 28th, perhaps they can save the country from falling to the communists?

5Ian Fleming would have loved this  Nov 12, 2009

"The Winds of October" plays in a period of post-war Greek history that is, in general, poorly known in the USA. It is a tale of intrigue and revolution in the Greek civil war that followed the end of World War II in the rest of Europe. It is one of a growing number of fictionalized memoirs emerging from the ranks of retired US intelligence officers who fought the SECRET Cold War. It reminded me of the James Bond books except for the fact that Bond would have spoken better Greek than did the novel's protagonist, Major Hall of the US Military Mission in Athens. The tale follows a plot line that Ian Fleming would have loved, and that the makers of the James Bond films could easily exponentiate to the silver screen. Well worth the time to read.

Jamws Stephens' new book is really, really good!!
The reader is put right in the middle of a turbulent period and the way the book is written, the reader can actually see what's going on!
Winds of October should be on every book list!

If you enjoy international espionage/counter espionage fiction that doesn't take weeks to read, then you'll enjoy this little book that's perfect for that trip from San Francisco to Hawaii. It's short but will "tickle" your mental faculties. I know the author and he's "been out there," so writes from experience.
