TOKYO ROSE????? Jun 11, 2010
By Joseph R. Calamia "They Called Her Tokyo Rose" (Expanded 2nd Edition) by the late Rex Gunn is not just about "Tokyo Rose", but a nicely written synopsis of the Pacific Theater in WWII as well. Mr. Gunn has a special way of merging the intriguing story of Iva Toguri (one of the many "Tokyo Roses), and the entire nasty war across that great "peaceful" ocean that finally ended in August of 1945. Gunn's writing was very good, and he brought out a great many unknown facts and follies hidden by not just the Japanese, but our own Government as well. He was no fan of General Mc Arthur or FDR of that...I can assure you!
Mr. Gunn's writing reminded a great deal of Ernie Pyle, and although not as famous, his coverage of the pacific war is equal to that of Pyle's coverage of the European theater.
Now for the main focus of Gunn's book..."Tokyo Rose."
Naturally, I always thought "Tokyo Rose" was but one person, and that was... Ms. Iva Toguri, who was later indicted, prosecuted and sentenced to serve 10 years for Treasonous Acts long after the war ended. But, was she..."Tokyo Rose?" Actually there appear to have been at least 6 other females who broadcast in English under various names, but none...used "Tokyo Rose." In fact, according to the author's research, it appears that "Tokyo Rose" was an American coined pseudonym for any of the Radio Tokyo announcers! However...Iva was the only American citizen of the group and had refused to become a Japanese citizen. In addition, she was the only one who had graduated from an American university (UCLA!).
Was Iva Toguri the real "Tokyo Rose" or had she been wrongly pruned from a bush of many roses? An interesting read to say the least! Five stars for Rex Gunn!

I ordered this book for a friend....he had been trying to find and couldn't....he was just thrilled. My only complaint is it took longer to get than what I expected.....However, in fairness, this is my first experience ordering a book like this......The book arrived in perfect condition......
