Excellent and Convenient Nov 19, 2008
By James V. Stockton Dwyer provides both a comprehensive and summary exegesis of, as the title suggests, the seven biblical references commonly used to claim that God condemns homosexuality or homosexuals, or both. Dwyer is responsible and faithful in demonstrating that such claims are at best misguided. He offers any genuine student of scripture authentic exegesis of each passage. He does not condemn persons who believe that gay people are inherently sinful or condemned. He simply shows that scripture cannot truly be called upon to support such beliefs. Readers may find some of his arguments familiar, perhaps having encountered similar ones elsewhere. But one cannot discount the convenience of having all seven of these passages, critical to any scriptural study on the hot-button topic du jour, addressed in a single small volume, and addressed wisely, intelligently, and faithfully.

Helpful Book Oct 13, 2008
By P. Carey Rev. John Dwyer has offered us a helpful discussion of "those" seven references to homosexuality in the Old and New Testaments. He analyzes each of the references, places them into proper context for the reader, and explores the implications after doing this research and discussion. This is well-written, helpful book that will help our ongoing dialogue about homosexuality and the church.

Controversy vs Controversy May 11, 2009
By Monti Skiby Those 7 References: A Study of 7 References to Homosexuality in the Bible is a reference book. It is not a novel or an easy read book. What it is, is a book that has been written by the Bishop who is a homosexual and has done extensive research into the areas of homosexuality and what the bible does and does not say about homosexuality. It is a very good book to read if you have questions about homosexuals attending church and whether they are accepted by God. It is an excellant book to read if you are religious and you have a family member who is homosexual and you have a battle accepting them because of your beliefs. I recommend this book if you are homosexual and think you can not be a christian because you are gay,it will answer alot of questions and allow you to accept yourself and know that God accepts you too.

An astoundingly good work May 26, 2010
By Andrew Dykstra This is one of the finest books of its type. It is a convincing remedy against abuse of scripture. This author very convincingly addresses each of the so-called "clobber texts", passages of the Bible used to condemn one particular group; gays and lesbians. One reference after another is considered thoroughly and then discounted as a valid means of condemnation. I am most particularly grateful and impressed with the author's section on Sodom and Gomorrah. The author links Genesis 19 to Judges 19, two stories that are strikingly similar in their details and tellingly different in important ways. I am indebted to this author for his consideration of how the Sodom story appears at first almost an interruption of the Abraham story and of how the overarching story is about God's covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and later with Israel. It is an important principle of Bible study that we must not bring our assumptions to the Bible, but must give the Bible an opportunity to explain itself. Sometimes later passages will comment (with further insight) the significance of earlier events. For example, Ezekiel 16:49 provides a very telling commentary on the Sodom and Gomorrah story.
If you have ever been abused as a result of the misuse of Scripture, this book is for you. The Christian church at large is being shaken by this controversy. This book may be added to the chorus declaring that we have nothing to fear. This book addresses the subject by taking each passage very seriously. I am most grateful for the thoroughness and scholarship of this author.

Good Resource For Those Questioning Mar 29, 2011
By Dale E. Morgan The book is extremely detailed in nature and does an excellent job taking Scripture in context by printing entire chapters of the verses in question as well as looking at the original language and different emphases that are typically lost in standard translation. This book will mostly likely challenge your views on homosexuality, especially if you were raised up from a fundamentalist background like I was. That's exactly the point, though. Those 7 References presents a very thorough debunking of common misconceptions Christians have about homosexuality, while backing up it's claims and assertions.
