To Light a Fire and Other Short Stories

Arran Gimba’s To Light a Fire and Other Short Stories is a startling collection of highly unique and powerful stories of the human condition, often taken to the most fascinating and unlikely extremes. From the imaginative and starkly unsettling Death is Overrated, where the blatant disregard for human life is explored with such sarcasm and psychological edginess that the reader is quickly pulled into the action, to the wonderfully unpredictable The Crush Can, where a simple marketing idea to expand college students’ dating possibilities turns bizarre. In the title story, To Light a Fire, an act as innocuous as finding a nail clipper leads to near anarchy in a town’s high school. These stories in this remarkable collection reflect all that is sardonic and terrifying about living our quotidian lives. Ten very distinctive stories, each one capable of standing alone. This is an edgy and exceptional must-read book.

5An Entertaining and Provocative Read  Feb 28, 2011
By Kat C.
These are really well crafted stories. I enjoyed every one of them. It is very refreshing to read fiction that is both thought provoking and entertaining.

After finishing the last story, I found myself wanting more. And while reading them, the time just flew by. Gimba's style is so humorous and accessible! And I had so much fun reading the collection, that it wasn't until later that I began to appreciate the depth of thought that went into the writing.

I am so glad that he released a second collection entitled "Not True Stories from Oregon." I just finished reading that collection, and now I am going back to read "To Light a Fire..." again.

5A collection that should be strongly considered by all general short fiction readers  Nov 10, 2009
By Midwest Book Review
Harsh reality is what no one wants to face, but has to at some point. "To Light a Fire: And Other Short Stories" is a collection of short fiction from Arran N. Gimba, on facing the cruel life we all often try to ignore. From dating games to dating Hollywood celebrities and facing death, his stories are varied and offer much food for thought. "To Life a Fire" is a collection that should be strongly considered by all general short fiction readers.

5Well done  Aug 30, 2009
By maggie
The ten short stories in this book really are thought provoking. Each one carries a meaning deeper than what is written. "Last Stop" is one of my favorites. The character is endearing and the story is easy to relate to. The artwork and quotes in the book are very well done as well; they totally capture the heart of each story. I recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this new author.
