Trails to Testimony: Bringing Young Men to Christ Through Scouting

Trails to Testimony: Bringing Young Men to Christ Through Scouting - President Gordon B. Hinckley said, "There is no more significant work in this world than the preparation of boys to become men . . . who are qualified to live productive and meaningful lives." And President Thomas S. Monson underscores this thought when he says that "It's easier to build boys than to mend them." Bradley D. Harris, associate professor of recreational management and youth leadership at Brigham Young University, challenges parents and youth leaders alike to rediscover the spiritual dimensions of Scouting-to focus on the close relationship that should exist between Scouting and the Aaronic Priesthood. The author's 22-year professional career with the Boy Scouts of America, combined with extensive experience within the Church in various priesthood leadership capacities, gives him invaluable insights into the responsibilities that parents and leaders have in bringing young men to Christ. "The family is the first institution charged with bringing young men to Christ. . . . Working in harmony, the family and the Aaronic Priesthood should create an atmosphere where young men's individual testimonies can . . . flourish." Trails to Testimony is a powerful guide for families and leaders entrusted with the sacred responsibility of teaching and guiding the young men of the Church.

5Must read for LDS Young Men/Scout Leaders and Parents  Oct 24, 2009
This is a wonderful book and exactly what I needed as a young men's leader in my LDS ward. If you are worried about the spiritual side of your scouts as the boys become men, don't hesitate to read this book. I just finished Baden-Powell's life history and his book called "Rovering for Success." These three books have certainly deepened my resolve to help young men become "all that they can become."

5Excellent addition to any Scout unit library  Oct 19, 2009
I have been in scouting on both the LDS and non-LDS side and I am a Woodbadger (Buffalo). Brad Harris lays out so well how the two "worlds" of scouting (LDS and non-LDS) can be one and still do everything in the YM program. The book also describes the importance of keeping scouting alive for the older youth and even though high adventure is their focus, scouting is still a critical part of their development into adults and strong citizens.

This also a good book for non-LDS units or councils who work a lot with LDS units, in helping them understand how a LDS unit functions. The chapter on "Aims of Scouting" is very good description.

I have enjoyed reading this book and refer back to it often. Thanks Brother Harris!

5Brad Harris wrote the book on Scouting  Oct 12, 2009
I recommend Trails to Testimony by Brad Harris without reservation. I believe that the effective implementation of the principles found therein is the key to achieving successful Scouting units - Namely, those which will help young men develop into great missionaries, worthy husbands and fathers and, most importantly, dedicated disciples of Christ.

Like no other, Brad Harris understands the relationship between a young man's foundational testimony and the Scouting program. His experience as a leader of boys and men, as a professor at Brigham Young University, as a professional Scouter with BSA's National Council, as a member of the Young Men General Board and as one who contributed so much to the development of the Venturing program and its associated curriculum, uniquely qualify him as the authority on the subject.

The leaders of our LDS Ward and Stake are using this book to make sure that our program is as effective and inspiring as it can possibly be. I so appreciate the dedication of leaders like Brad Harris in making my life as an LDS lay leader so much easier and in making the lives of our young men so much more promising. Both the lives of your own sons and the lives of the young men with whom you work will be richly blessed if you apply what you learn in Trails to Testimony.

5A must read for LDS scouters or LDS parents of scouts!  Sep 29, 2009
As a mother of a recently turned 12 year old boy, I loved reading this book! It explains how scouting is supposed to help my boys become great men. I hope that all Young Men leaders and scouting leaders will take the time to read this book and learn how they can help the boys in their charge, no matter the size of their quorums. Scouting can bring boys to Christ if a few basic principles are followed which this book outlines excellently.

5Wonderful book  Sep 12, 2009
I know the author and bought the book because of that and there is a story about my son in it. But as I read the book it is a wonderful about teaching and helping young men come to Christ. Great Great book
