READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE... Sep 13, 2009
By Lorren Daro ...of all my children, Sonny is the most favored. Only he carries on the true voice of Bandini that was carefully crafted to reflect my cluttered interior. He is blessed with the honesty, clarity and directness stripped of ego that I tried so hard to conjur in my pages. We shared a life once in LA, and later in Big Sur. We imbibed strong elixers and contemplated one another through the choice haze that always surrounded us. Often he strummed and I sang, neither of us expertly, but with all the love we could muster. It was the way we talked. In the end, of course, we disappointed each other, as those who come too close tend to do. Never more than a few days pass that in my mind I don't see and admire the elegant slink of that graceful panther, just as I first did across the cutter's room at Jay's from Geller's chair in 1962. A Time Of Wonder Aug 13, 2008
By Lauren Wild A great ride through the sixties!
Very hard to put down.
I've read it three times!
Straight-on insight in an easy adult read. Aug 11, 2008
By Frank B. "Tripping" is a view into the humanity of those we celebrate as Hollywood stars, as seen by an insightful and eloquent master of multiple dimensions. Sal Orefice masters an ability to ignore the hype and draw out the real person which he does through the deliverance as a master groomsman providing service to a multitude of the most famous, one of the finest of our generation. He's a master observer and shares stories of those he's met on his traveled road with easy reading flow, humor, and small bits of personal insight that you can't put down. Listen up; he tells it straight, but don't ask for the 1 minute cut for sure, man.
Beyond Fascinating Mar 18, 2008
By Fiasco Curious about what Elvis was really like? Wonder what Hollywood in th 60s was all about? Sal Orefice was there for all of it, and his memories and experiences make for fun and fascinating reading. He may have cut his teeth as a hair stylist, but Sal's strength as a writer really shines in a style that manages to be both breezy and philosophical at the same time. His insights on numerous Hollywood luminaries are both funny and tragic, and his various descriptions of Jay Sebring, with whom Orefice shared a long and special friendship, give substance to a man who's unfortunate legacy as a victim of the Manson family has overshadowed his impact on our culture, which is still felt today. Of particular interest to this reader were the hilarious passages regarding Sterling Hayden, the blacklisted actor who Orefice befriended late in his life. The list of other celebrities and icons who entrust their locks to Orefice are too numerous to mention here, but it's clear that the narrator was much more than just a barber to the stars. For many, he was their confidante and counsel. Unlike many memoirs in this vein, Orefice never toots his own horn, yet he certainly has cause to. Intelligent, funny, and philosophical, "Tripping with the King" is a book you won't be able to put down...and once you've finished it, you'll be sad it's over.

"gepo"
Salvatore Orefice has written a book about famous people and their entourages that I found fascinating. Not just Elvis Presley and Jay Sebring, but the many people interacting with them. The personalities and psychology of Elvis Presley, Jay Sebring, and Salvatore Orefice are shown by events and conversations between them. I didn't think anything was gossip or innuendo. The prose is fast paced, and that made the book a pleasure to read. I highly recommend "Tripping With the King and Others" to all readers.
