Remarkable! Jul 27, 2008
By Janet K. Messman I truely remarkable book. One that will be hard for readers to put down. I have read this book numerous times. As a former student of the author I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge of the Spanish language with this professor.

I, of course, can read in English and can do pretty well in Spanish as well. I am an old teacher who has read quite a bit of everything. This book kept me mesmerized from the moment I opened it. It is written in a simple, not simplistic, very down-to-earth style. Several of my friends have borrowed it and have loved it. One of them, a man who has traveled extensively, said to me that he had never read anything like that and he enjoyed it a lot! An excellent bunch of chronicles about Cuba, the former Soviet Union and other countries; jokes that illustrate people's states of mind when facing what seem like insurmountable difficulties, in short, a book I highly recommend. I look forward to more books by this author.

Excellent reading and sharing Sep 18, 2005

This is an excellent value for the money. Some 370 pages in two languages, perfectly readable and enjoyable in each of them. I have learned a lot about countries, people, cultures and languages, let alone leaders, ministers and dictators! The author has obviously lived there, seen and done that.
Highly recommend it!

Once started, you can't put it down! Aug 28, 2005

Excellent reading, both in English and in Spanish. For those interested in linguistics, languages and dialects, there is a glossary and vocabulary section that explains some terms used in the book. Very human, objective and amusing reading. There are even Cuban jokes included! I started it and could not put it down until I had read almost half of it. I went to do something else and rushed back to finish reading. Once read, even while browsing through its pages, this books makes you think...and then you read again! Beautiful pages on Cuba, the former Soviet Union and other countries. Incredible experiences from the perspective of a professional, a well-traveled person and someone who "has been there and done that."
