What is happening in Macao on the turn of the 18th to the 19th century that makes the relationship between Portugal and China so special? The present historical analysis reveals us the restless world of South China, in the circumstances of the collapse of an ancient world and the emergence of new social configurations. Pirates and diplomats, opium dealers and traders of all kinds, secret societies, Mandarins and Portuguese dignitaries, all were mingling in Macao in those days - an official world and an underground world strangely interconnected.
