Ultrarunning: My Story

"There is nothing complicated about running. It is merely one foot in front of the other, the most basic mode of transportation. Yet run long enough and a transition takes place where running becomes rich with meaning and intuition. It is this road to spiritual insight that Mike Bouscaren pursues by doing races beyond the marathon, where oxygen comes hard, electrolytes deplete, and life is stripped down to real, true, honest, simple meaning." 5You don't need to run 100 miles to be inspired by Mike's story, 20 Nov 2009  Nov 20, 2009
Having come no closer to ultrarunning than a single marathon finish ten years ago, I initially read this book out of sheer voyeurism, heading straight for the section on the 100 miler: How big were the blisters? How many toe nails did you lose? However this is the reverse of the value in Mike's story: the pinnacles of achievement are to be found in the every-day preparations, musings and deep personal insights. Mike is never so crass as to draw universal conclusions from his own experiences, leaving it to the reader to draw their own parallels which will be startlingly relevant and thought-provoking for anyone driven to achieve (which we learn often means just plain driven, with no insight as to where or why). At first sight a lightweight read, this is a book that bears multiple visits.

2Disappointing and Trite  Oct 20, 2009
After all the great reviews, maybe my expectations were too high. I feel cheated by this book. It reads like a lightly edited diary, not an inspirational memoir. I learned nothing from it that other, more technically trained ultrarunners could teach me. The spiritualism came off like the musings of a part-time yoga teacher.

I do understand what he's feeling is very powerful, and I also understand the importance of focused running to mindfulness in daily life, and to an altered state that continues on once the running's over. Ultramarathons have clearly brought the author deep emotional experiences. But they have not brought him the ability to communicate their power.

If this were a free read, such as a blog, I wouldn't criticize an amateur writer, who may yet have a wonderful book in him. But I paid $13 for this, and considering what books I could have bought, I consider this purchase a waste of my time and money.

5Ultrarunners must read.  Mar 01, 2009
Ultrarunning: My Story by Mike Bouscaren is a very good book for those that have run ultra's. If you have had a DNF like Mike you move on and run another one. My first VT100 was a DNF at 92 miles with only 8 miles to go??? The next year I was back and completed it in under 30 hours. He puts in just a little about his life which you may or may not relate, but if you do it is very powerful. DNF does not always mean "did not finish" but more important "Do Nothing Foolish" so you can move on and learn from the experience to do it better or the right way next time. "One Day at a Time" Mike thanks for a great book.

5The best  Aug 14, 2008
I have read almost everything written on this subject and Mike's book is the best, by far; the most literate, the most personal and the most thoughtful. It's a must for anyone who is curious about the unique challenges of this sport.

I am not a runner and I really enjoyed this book. Mike shares his personal challenges thoughout his life and how ultrarunning cleared his path by teaching him to never give up.It is a lesson even the walkers in the world can learn. Read Ultrarunning to find out if you are a pusher or a puller and to set goals for your own victory lap.
