Murder and Race in the Nation's Capital Mar 27, 2009
By Robert A. Bayless Two private detectives, one white, one black, reluctantly join forces in 1954 to solve the murder of a young black man. Their investigation originates in the shadow of the nation's Capitol, but passes through the headquarters of a black power group in Chicago and takes an uncomfortable ride in the "Jim Crow" South. At the same time that U.S. Supreme Court justices quietly negotiate the decision that would strike down school segregation, racial naiveté and animosity pepper the relationship between these two detectives while they criss-cross borders between segregated communities in pursuit of a murderer. James Kidney's well plotted mystery and interesting characters kept me engaged to the end, and the streets, buildings and demographics of Washington and its suburbs in the early '50s came alive in this well researched book. The book holds its own for any reader simply as a good mystery, and may have special appeal for book clubs looking for a catalyst for discussion of race, readers familiar with the District of Columbia, and those of us who appreciate books with larger than usual print.

Put this at the top of your "To Read" list May 04, 2009
By S. T. Rose Unanimous Verdict instantly grabbed my attention. I grew up in the DC area well after the Civil Rights Era, and found myself struggling to put it down. The characters are very easy to relate to and the descriptions of both the people and the places are remarkable. The book proved to be very interesting as well as informative as it paints a vivid picture of life in both the north and south during the early stages of the Civil Rights Movement. Unanimous Verdict is a great work of historical fiction that I would highly recommend.

Great read! Apr 14, 2010
By R. Parr I just read Unanimous Verdict for the third time since I purchased it in March 2009. Each time I am further engaged by Mr. Kidney's development of the book's characters, detailed descriptions of the environments in which those characters live and move about, and fascinating account of the personalities, thought processes, and politics of the United States Supreme Court Justices who rendered the Brown v. Board of Education decision. I highly recommend this book!

Unanimous Verdict -- A Great Read Apr 27, 2009
By Barbara Haugen Unanimous Verdict "Unaninous Verdict" is a wonderful historical novel, and amazing as a first novel by author James A. Kidney. Mr. Kidney grew up and came of age in the Washington, DC, area during the fifties and sixties, and perhaps that is why his descriptions seem so true and his characters come to life so vividly in the pages of this book. It covers some grizzly territory in our history -- segregation, racism, lynchings -- but it also holds the promise of change when the Supreme Court considers Brown v. Board of Education. Against this backdrop, Mr. Kidney creates drama and teaches us about where we have been as a nation. I found it hard to put down -- a good yarn and a good history lesson. It doesn't get much better in this genre. Barbara Haugen

Although this book if somewhat dragging, it is a good book which held my interest until the conclusion at the end. The subject matter is such that it correlates well with current events. I think it could have been shortened and less wordy, it was a good red.
