Uncommon Sense - Children and School

If common sense prevailed, there would be fewer academic, social and behavior problems within our schools today. This does not appear to be the case as uncommon sense, apparently, is in great demand. This "uncommon sense" approach is pro-active and focuses on the success of all children in school. Beliefs and mechanisms regarding the historical schooling of children, along with some post 9/11 issues, are challenged with new ideas, thoughts and questions. Presented in a diary-like format, this book invites the reader into an intimate exploration of personal and professional growth - all with the best interests of children in mind and heart.

"Clearly and supportively written, this book offers a wealth of exciting new opportunities for improvement in our schools. Whether you are a teacher, a parent or someone who works in a school, this innovative book will gently nudge you into thinking differently. Uncommon Sense is uncommonly good."

5An insightful guide for anyone who works with children....  Sep 07, 2008
David Willson's Uncommon Sense: Children and School is a wonderful resource for people who work with children. The author takes on a number of challenging issues in education and demonstrates how parents and professionals can best work together in prioritizing the needs of children. This is truly an insightful and thought provoking work. Mr. Willson's commitment and dedication to improving outcomes for children is evident from the first page to the last!

Policies and regulations require our schools to develop parent/school compacts that promise a cooperative relationship based on trust. This trust between home and school can be strained due to challenging student behaviors and needs. In many cases the parent/school compact must be more than "I promise to get my child to school ready to learn" or "I believe all students can learn." How then do parents and schools deliver the promises of such compacts?
David Wilson's Uncommon Sense: Children & School is one great answer for developing real parent/school relationships. I strongly recommend this book for school staff training and parent workshops as a part of a school's parent involvement policy. Because of the self-reflective design that does not shy away from the most challenging topics, Wilson's Uncommon Sense has the power to redefine broadly stated parent involvement policies into targeted parent and school involvement practice. I only want to know one more thing. Is David Wilson available for professional development conferences?

This book is a valuable tool for those of us that are new to working with Children or those of us that have had many years as professionals or parents and caregivers. David Willson brings his vast experience to breathe some life back into the idea of team to work toward helping children succeed in school. He offers an introspective approach to looking at your own philosophy, thoughts, motivations and limitations to move forward in doing what is right for kids.

5Hot Issues...  Aug 20, 2007
This book tackles a mulitude of "hot" educational issues. It allows the reader to ponder her/his own school-based issues and reflect on the *common sense approach to those issues at hand. Wow! Common sense in the educational arena does seem to be at a minimum. But why? ...Find out...Read this book!

Mr. Willson writes with great clarity about difficult topics. This insightful and interactive book forces the reader to examine their own ideas and preconceived notions about working with students and families. Thinking through topics systematically can be helpful when trying to make a team more efficient and effective for students. This book helps to stop the finger pointing and blaming we often see within the system and encourages individuals to begin by examining their own role as a member of the team. This book is a fantastic resource for families, advocates, teachers, and any member of the school team.
