Unlocking The King James Bible's Common Words and Phrases - A Dictionary For Today's Reader

For many, the King James (KJV) translation of the Bible is full of hard to understand, archaic words & phrases. Do you know the meaning of "draught house" (public restroom), "sackbut" (musical instrument), or "he slept with his fathers" (was buried)? Authorized in 1611 by James I of England, beloved by many for its beautiful style, the KJV can be extremely difficult to understand. Using Unlocking the King James Bible's Common Words and Phrases dictionary, you can now learn the meaning of those tough Bible words, like "concupiscence", "beeves" and "wist"... This dictionary is a required reference book for any good study library. Unlocking the King James dictionary is unique because its words and phrases were NOT chosen by theologians or experienced Christians, they were chosen by young Christians and nonbelievers who read through each word of every page of the Bible and recorded what they did not know or were confused with. This is a dictionary by the people, for the people!"

4great notes on the difficult english of the KJV  Apr 16, 2011
By john of san mateo ca
This book does not contain the KJV but has notes for each verse of the KJV to explain the archaic english,
for example, in Genesis 1:21
winged fowl = feathered birds.
but it does not indicate that whales is better translated as sea monsters or sea serpents.
It is obviously prepared by people who believe that the translations of the KJV should not be corrected.
There are some people who believe that the KJV is the best translation or that the KJV translation itself is inspired.
The notes format is much easier to use than the dictionary format.
Using this book is like reading KJV/NKJV side by side, or reading the KJV and consulting the margin of a Scofield bible for understanding archaic english.
For other aids to the KJV, I recommend the Interlinear Bible (Jay Green), Interlinear Bible (David Townsley), KJ3, NKJV, Young's Literal Translation, Emphasized Bible, Companion Bible, Newberry Bible Single Column , Scofield Study Bible, Nelson's King James Study Bible (Libery Annotated Study Bible) and Nelson's King James Commentary (Libery Commentary), Evidence Bible, New Defender's Study Bible, defined king james bible, king james easy reading (swordbible.org), king james 2000 bible, Resurrection Life Study Bible by Vince Garcia, etc.

For those who like dictionaries, just buy Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language 1828 or the OED.

Based on the messages in the appendices, I would assume the authors are Pentecostal Baptists. I also saw a typographical error in one of the appendices. It does seem like God is not powerful enough to prevent typographical errors in religious books.

One of the main authors is also an admirer of Pentecostal William Branham.
My sister used to be a member of a fundamentalist Pentecostal church which followed William Branham. Mental illness unfortunately runs in our family and when my sister was waiting for her baptism of the holy spirit which never came, she had a nervous breakdown which led to paranoid schizophrenia and later manic depressive illness and she died young during her college years from hospital bacteria later on. Fasting too much and praying too hard for the baptism of the holy spirit is just not a good idea for some types of people. Some people who tried to fast for 40 days have naturally died. Some who relied on God rather than doctors have also died. We all need to watch out for religious excesses.

2Not What I Expected  Jul 10, 2010
By MD
I expected to get something more like a normal dictionary, which provides a complete analysis of each word that it covers. And I expected each word to be organized alphabetically. Instead, the book is organized by Bible book, chapter, and verse. For each verse containing a hard-to understand word, it defines the word using a very short definition---sometimes a one-word definition. It really doesn't provide enough detail.

Also, the book must define the same word many times if the word appears multiple times in the Bible. If it defined each word only once, the book would be much, much smaller.

5A TOOL WORTH IT'S WEIGHT IN GOLD!  Apr 23, 2008
By Gerard J. Washburn
A unique reference book for the beginning Bible studier as well as the seasoned theologists. Most effective way I've found to ameliorate my Bible and history studies.
This book wont just sit on the shelf of a Christian's library.
