Unrest: Dissent In Suburbia

Ellie, a previously contented and ultimately self-interested upper-middle class housewife, has everything synonymous with the American dream-an opulent home in suburbia, a beautiful son, a loving pilot husband, and the best damn coffee beans that money can buy. But almost the instant three planes, used as missiles, strike their strategic targets on September 11th Ellie's illusions and Pollyanna-esque outlook are shattered and start to crumble like the massive walls of the Twin Towers. Now anxiety ridden, and uncharacteristically argumentative, Ellie tries to make some sense of the confrontational mess her life has mutated into. Decaffeinated, disconnected, discontent and extremely disagreeable, Ellie delves thoroughly into the human condition-asking tough, introspective, and often uncomfortably critical questions about today's societal norms and major influences. In Ellie's mind, no subject is sacred and no answer will suffice. Politics, religion, the media, and even bumper stickers are all fair game in Ellie's world-where freedom, freewill, and democracy are merely buzzwords and sound-bites designed to formulate our 'common interest.'

4Not "chick lite" but chick "delite"  Jun 19, 2007
If you are looking for an light fluff piece to read on the beach, this novel isn't the one for you but if you are looking for a thought-provoking, well crafted, funny book you have arrived at the right place. Even though, I have said that this isn't a "chick" book, the main character, Ellie, has a lot in common with that unborn bird. Both start out in a shell that provides protection, comfort & a blindness of sorts, until a crack appears, and causes them to shake off the familiar in order to grow.

5Unrest in Suburbia  Feb 20, 2007
A really fast read! A sincere inside look at a middle American housewife and her struggle to understand the course of a Nation torn between peaceful existence and a war half way around the world. This book shows that not all Americans feel bound to pursue the current path we are following while searching how to co-exist with family and friends who fail to share the same thoughts and values. Well thought out and done in a way that educates us to be more understanding of individuals who may not share our values in this high paced world of today. We can all learn form this riveting tale.

4Great book!  Feb 14, 2007
This book explores the effects of 9/11 and the war in Iraq on ordinary American citizens through the eyes of a suburban housewife. It touches on the concepts of good and evil, right and wrong and the morality of war, the Iraqi war in particular. It questions our prejudices and our lack of empathy for people who are "different" because of race, religion or because our leaders have labeled them as "evil".

It is a well analyzed, deep exploration of human nature, written in a light, witty style.

5WOW! I am blown away by how great this book is!  Dec 02, 2006
This book is amazing! It's supremely witty and relatable -- and the topics are so deep and philosophical that I feel like I got a huge education while being thoroughly entertained.
