Vargulf

When the mutilated body of a young woman is discovered in Boston’s historic North End Detectives Ed Fischer and John Nadeau are called in to investigate. Despite the brutality of the crime, there are no leads and it appears to be an isolated incident. However, a second murder just twenty-four hours later in Boston’s Backbay Fens seems eerily similar and the victims appear to be linked. Before the duo can put the pieces together, two more dead are found. Faced with a rising body count and the real prospect of a serial killer on the loose, the detectives must race against the clock to uncover the killer’s hair-raising identity before he, she or it strikes again. The debut novel from Tim Garrity, Vargulf represents a refreshing departure from the classic werewolf tale.

5Highly Entertaining  Nov 21, 2009

In the same vein as Steven King, a light and easy read. It was very difficult to put this book down. From the detailed characterizations, particularly of detectives Fischer and Nadeau, to the accurate descriptions of Boston landmarks, it is a lot of fun. The suspense builds throughout the book and the author knows just when to either keep you hanging or bring the gruesome scenes to life.. er, death. If mayhem and mystery interest you, then you will really like this. An excellent first novel.

5solid  Nov 14, 2009

A quick and highly entertaining read. The book deviates from the tradition warewolf stories of the lame silver bullets or the emo love stories that often times ruins classic horror stories. The ending has a surprising twist that highlights that deviance. Garrity beautifully details detectives Fischer and Nadeau characters along with their struggles to identify the perp. He also describes with pulchritudinous detail the death scenes that paints the horror of the scene, or if you are a funny person, the humor. Although the detective's dialogue is banal, it is hilarious at the same time. I will tell you what after reading this novel, Boston's night life truly did get...a little bit hairier. Hope there is a part two.

4Not terrible  Aug 23, 2010

This was a decent werewolf story. Mysteriously and very gruesome members of a research party, who went to India to investigate wolf killings, are all being killed. All but one. Two detectives are on the case and each body discovery is worse than the last.

This wasn't a scary book to me, just a story. Also the author enjoyed the use of many different descriptive words. Using the Kindle I had to look up many of the words that I don't hear in everyday conversation. Due to the word play I wasn't very impressed with the book. It just felt like the author was trying to snaz it up.

For all werewolf lovers, this is a must read, but not a re-read or keeper.

5Fantastic Book!  Jun 11, 2010

Fantastic first effort by newcomer Tim Garrity. Very well written and easy to read; a highly entertaining book. Well written and at times overly descriptive. Book is perfect for a vacation. I read this book and heartily enjoyed it; highly recommended for readers of any type.

5Quick, enetrtaining read  May 13, 2010

Well written and at times overly descriptive. This book is perfect for anyone going away on a short vacation or just enjoying a weekend at the beach. While at times the dialougue can be a bit leaden Garrity more than makes up for it with his action sequences particularly during the books later climatic scenes. Recommended for sure!
