Vera

Vera is a young girl with extraordinary intelligence. She was born in a small ship-building town at the start of WWII. This is the story of Vera and the people who love her, help her, pity her, envy her, fear her, and covet her. How Vera rises out of adversity makes her story unusually compelling. Roberta Duncan is a magnificent storyteller.

4History + Fiction = Intrigue  Sep 03, 2011
By Seeker
Duncan has an unusual style of writing, training the reader through the chapters, the style "growing up" as Vera does. Based on the life of a child prodigy from Bath, Maine (1940ish), this story is full of real people, some you love, some you hate, some you pity. But Vera is not one to be defeated by what life hands her. She infuses the reader with hope. This story has both history and mystery. Amusing and deep, Vera is not a casual read.

5Astounding for a new author!  Jan 03, 2010
By C. Snyder "Crinbrat"
Vera is an amazing story about an infant prodigy growing up in Bath, Maine during WW2. She is the only child of a drunken mother, practically homeless, but her intelligence challenges even the highest IQ, even before she is 14!

Duncan's literary style is a tribute to Faulkner with its unique structure. It plays with your mind and pulls on your heart strings. Truly an amazing read, I couldn't put it down!
