Very Good, not Great start to a series Feb 18, 2010 There are several things I like about this book, and the first of them is that it isn't a book where every problem is solved from within the sleeve of an all-powerful wizard's robe. There's an intriguing plot that balances just enough action with character building, and political machinations to keep the story rumbling along amidst the intricacies. This volume has some action (fights, duels, small battles, some magic), but doesn't especially dwell on the gruesome details of battle, but he writes it as realistically as you'd want. It's not a comedy at all; but there are several moments where I did laugh as I read. In terms of style, it's very well written but there is just a hint here and there (small instances of repetition, for example) that remind you this is Quyle's first book.

Fun to Read, No Pretensions Jan 29, 2010 99% of the time I like to read a book that lets me relax and enjoy a story without the author's ego getting in the way - this book fits that category perfectly. The story is straight-forward; the book is well-written; the concepts of the genre are pretty well known by all of us, and the author sticks to them. The hero of the story is a lonely boy with just a friend or two, a little bit of an outcast and a little bit alone, who stumbles into the cave where he receives a great new power to heal and cure illness. After that, Alec has to work his way through the wilderness, and then through the politics and society of Goldenfields, a large, medieval-to-renaissance era city. "Visions of Power" fits the fantasy mold, but also gives it a twist or two that keeps the plot fresh. I've read the book in just a couple of days of power-reading, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
A book that captures the imagination Jan 20, 2010 There are a lot of authors and fantasy series out there who do a good job producing entertainment, but I rate this series a little above the rest because the writing really makes the story flow smoothly. The action is slightly unpredictable at times; I hadn't expected that healing people would be a 'super-power' but Quyle's story of Alec does make it believable. The characters are likeable, the dialog is good, and the book only has a couple of slow patches that don't last long. I've enjoyed the sequels and the way the plot twists and progresses.

A ceative and captivating read -- great "first" novel. I anxiously await book #2.
Nice beginning to a fantasy series Aug 17, 2009 I enjoy relaxing and reading fantasy series, especially in cases like "Visions of Power" where a reader can come to count on and root for the characters in the book as if they were friends in real life. This book (and its sequel) did a great job of creating a group of people who felt real, who handled problems that were like my problems some of the time, but then had extraordinary adventures and abilities as well, which gave the story the element of interest that I especially like in fantasy stories. I'm looking forward to starting on the third book, and then the fourth book after that!
