A must read! Sep 14, 2009 I grew up in Texas and was immediately drawn into Waiting for Thunder. I found myself wondering at every turn, is this part real or fiction? Raney does an excellent job of drawing you into her characters and making you feel like you are there on that dude ranch trying to make it work. The book evokes all of the emotions in you and is a very entertaining read. I rarely go back and read a book again but this one will be on my "do over" list for sure.

Not Your Average Novel Jul 21, 2009 At a merely cursory glance, Waiting for Thunder might seem like your average romance / western, but do not do yourself the disservice and write it off as such. Ms. Raney's novel runs circles around old cliches and conventions, and her characters arise as both fallible and believable. Her pacing is suberb; the novel never drags and always feels fresh, as she weaves mystery, romance and more seamlessly.
The imagery is both profound and rewarding; Waiting for Thunder is a book that could read at lightning speed but deserves to be read slowly and with care - or twice. Clearly, Ms. Raney did not throw together a typical steamy romance, but rather took a great deal of time and effort to carefully construct a novel that would do her subject matter justice, and she does so suberbly. She makes clever and poignant statements about the dark underbelly of southern small town life and not in a way that feels stale in the slightest. At the same time, she illustrates the positive aspects of such a life, hand-in-hand with the negative so that the entire story feels just like reality.
Do yourself a favor and read Waiting for Thunder. Once you get into it, after the first 50 - 100 pages or so, the novel really ripens and becomes more than you could imagine.
waiting for Thunder Jun 28, 2009 Having suffered from a bout of "cowboyitis" myself and knowing friends who also had their cowboy flings, I will admit this book had me wincing with self recognition.
The author nails the modern day cowboy as well as the urban folk who hanker for an authentic, living-on-the-land experience. The story is told with grit and humor.

Great read!! Jun 25, 2009 This was an extremely entertaining book that really drew me right into the story. The characters were very well defined. The author clearly knew the people and the place about which she was writing. I would recommend it to everyone...Texans and non-Texans...for a sliver of life that most of us will never get a glimpse of.

Amazing Read! May 29, 2009 I bought this book on a whim and I'm so glad I did. The author infuses such humor, emotion, and even realism into the story that you can't help but to be drawn into the world of Ann McMann and Thunder. These are just a few of the many, many reasons that Waiting for Thunder is easily one of my favorite books this year.
