It was good. Feb 09, 2008
By Joshua Wachter
"The Deposed King"
Pretty decent. The beginning was fun. The middle was fun. The middle end kind of dragged, as they were on the planet so much and the characters we followed seemed to multiply. But a good resolution. On the whole I enjoyed this book and would recomend it.

Solid, fast-paced space opera Nov 15, 2007
By Jonathan There isn't a lot of technical detail in this story; the focus is much more on characters. When your society collapses, what do you do? After alien sabotage destroys the entire infrastructure of the Star League and kills whole populations, the crew of Gilgamesh are on the verge of coming apart. Some give up and abandon their posts; some desert the ship in hopes of finding their families; and some even decide they'll get a better chance by siding the with League's enemies. Most, though, follow their new captain, Jaqueline Ellsworth, although she's almost as out of her depth as they are.
When Ellsworth is dispatched to secure a League supply dump that might restore some of the League's useless hardware, she finds a host of enemies who want the stuff just as badly -- alien soldiers, human mercenaries, and a traitorous ex-crewmate. They have more troops, guns, and spacecraft; but Ellsworth has good people. New-fledged gunnery officer Rhada McClerndon, hulking heavy-worlder Marine Greg Sadgipour, and fussy science specialist Chtak'Chr become entangled in conflicts both planet-side and in space, trying to gain some critical edge for the final showdown that Gilgamesh can't win on her own.

A great entertaining read Mar 07, 2011

A well written book! Great characters without the abundance of soapy bloat found in so many other scifi books these days. Entertaining and fun to read, left me wishing for a prequel, sequel, or just further adventures of several interesting characters.
Well Written Feb 02, 2012
By Bob In the interest of full disclosure I know the author, have for a number of years and respect and admire him in the capcity I know him. I selected this book from among his various works authored because it is his alone. I suspect I will be buying other works he has co-authored.
The style is very reminisent of H. Beam Piper with a strong 'historical' background that you can see is based on actual historical trends and happenings. The book flows smoothly (I read it in two nights on a business trip) with the characters developing at a reasonable pace and avoids developing a 'super' character(s) who has no failings and all the characters come off as very human and you'd probably recognize their traits in someone you know in real life. It also does not get bogged down in minutia (techinical descriptions of equipment, etal).
You will recognize ideas and concepts borrowed from other sci-fi books (but in reality almost nothing today is "new") but the author does do a nice job of giving each of them a uniqueness so that you have a vague feeling of familiarity with the background material and situations. This works well in this instance because it is like spices in a dish, subtle enhances the recipe, you can concentrate on the main action (the situtation, action and major characters), the meat is not overwhelmed by the spices.
For those of us who know Scott as 'Colonel' you will find youself picking up on a number of inside jokes, names and maybe a few characters/situations.
Read it, I think you'll like it.
Well done space / military adventure Aug 04, 2011
By Ed Burkhead I liked it!
This was more in the David Weber style than in Bujold's style but I liked WAtR better than the last several Honor Harrington main plot line books.
The author created engaging characters, introduced them well, built them well and made them important. He also created a critical challenge and set the people to work on it.
The pace of the book was good with something to look forward to at all times and I could usually expect that to happen in the next few or few dozen pages. While the story did build to an overall climax, it was more like a saw-tooth with a LOT of little penultimate battles, catastrophes, recoveries, and resolutions. The pacing kept me turning pages and reduced my hours of sleep.
I liked the world building and mechanics of the story. This applies to the societies as well as the ships and technologies.
One other reviewer said that he wished there were sequels to this. I'd agree.
Please publish this in an affordable e-book version. It deserves to be read much more widely.
