Weed

Angela, an avid gardener, and Andrew, a grumpy boy, are neighbors. While Angela carefully tends her plants, removing dandelions that she's been told crowd out her favorite plants, dandelions take root in Andrew's yard. When Angela sees Andrew smiling at his dandelions, she realizes a plant or a person can be given a bad reputation when called a name. With childlike simplicity and fresh watercolor illustrations, this picture book subtly weaves a lesson about language and feelings.

5Author/Illustrator's comments  Nov 27, 2008
By Jan M. Hampton
This edition is a reprint, created by BookSurge, of the original Weed I wrote and illustrated in 1980 when my name was Jan Waide. I am extremely pleased with the quality of the reprinted books! The colors in the watercolor illustrations are fresh and clear, and the text is clean and sharp. This is a lovely edition.

For many years, I have been asked to read this book, and Jennifer, my other reprinted children's book, to groups of children in schools and churches. I recently read both books to a large, multicultural assembly of first and second graders. From their comments and their requests for copies, it was clear that the children understood the connection the book makes between weeds and name-calling and that they are satisfied with the pleasant conclusion.
