It's okay, you are not your mother. Nov 28, 2011
By Julie S.
"Julie"
This is a great book! I immediately bought several copies after reading it and sent them to female friends who were struggling with similar `mother' issues. My own mother was impossible to please, being a super perfectionist, further complicated by being divorced and raising my sister and me without assistance. Our childhood was extremely stressful and tense, as we were always trying to be the perfect children and never make mistakes so we wouldn't upset our mother. I attended Jackie's women group therapy, learned how to release years of pent up anger, confusion, and frustration toward my mother and absent alcoholic father, which was affecting my personal relationships. This book, as did Jackie's therapy, teaches you how to understand `mom's' behavior and how to communicate with challenging, overbearing, perfectionist personalities in your life, not just in one's family.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with children, who may have experienced similar parental issues, so they are aware of their own behavior and not repeat this experience onto their children, to enhance their communication and happiness within the family now.
A book to learn from Mar 14, 2010
By Ole Knut As a man and a father, reading this book I discovered things in my own life I wish I had seen many years ago. It is very useful for understanding personal and family relationships, not least between generations, for both men and women.
My wife says: As a long-time health professional and a mother of four daughters I find this book excellent background reading for health personnel working in supportive functions, and a wisely designed tool for persons seeking to sort out a troubled existence, not least young women of all ages.
A great self-help novel! Jul 23, 2009
By Stephanie Day What About Me?: A Novel Approach to Personal Growth
Jacqueline Dierks was my counselor for a couple of years and her methods of counseling are like no other. I think it is so wonderful that she has documented her methods in her book "What About Me?" This novel is easy to read and still explains her methods of counseling without being overwhelming. The fact that the book was written as a novel makes it much more approachable. I highly recommend this book!
Finding Peace Jun 20, 2009
By Linda Costello I just finished this book, and it couldn't have come at a better time!
Jackie Dierks was my therapist for two years, during and following my two year training in Gestalt Therapy at the Gestalt Institute of Phoenix. It always helps to have someone to talk with when going through such intense training, and Jackie was great! She was so supportive and positive, and her suggestions made so much sense! I really enjoyed having her as a therapist, and probably continued going to her for my once a month appointment months after I didn't really need to anymore, just because I loved basking in the warmth and appreciation I felt with her.
Her book brings me right back to those sessions.
The book gives us an inside peek into the therapy sessions of a troubled young woman, Samantha, who has challenges coping with her family. Maggie, the therapist in the story, confronts the issues in a gentle, yet straightforward way, offering suggestions to Samantha; suggestions so clear that anyone can follow along and incorporate them into their own lives.
The appendices in the book also give handouts that can be used in our own journeys toward greater self-awareness and self-control.
As a coach, it is important for me to continually check in with myself, to see where I am at, so that I can give my best to those I work with. This book took me right back to the therapy sessions I had with Jackie, and I have found that in the past two days, I have been remembering the very basic function of breathing consciously. It makes all the difference, especially in stressful situations. As a result, my life seems to be flowing better than ever. I don't feel rushed. I don't feel overwhelmed. I feel as though I am in the flow.
Needless to say, I highly recommend this book to, well, everyone!
Practical Help is on the Way! Jun 03, 2009
By Amanda I have a degree in counseling, but this book has given me new insights to my field. The books value extends to being a self-help tool also. Nice, since the writing flows in a conversational way for the average reader. This book should be in all college counseling center libraries. I hope the author has many additional books in mind with novel approach.
