Presenting that Which is Timeless May 21, 2009
By Mathew V. Allen In a preface to a collection of works by C.S. Lewis, Walter Hooper wrote of the author, "Though Lewis's methods are not acceptable to liberal theologians... he has probably got more orthodox Christianity into more heads than any religious writer since G.K. Chesterton." Hooper goes on to comment that the reason Mr. Lewis was able to achieve this effect was, "His graceful prose, his easy conversational style...his striking metaphors, and love of clarity are, no doubt, chiefly the result of his wide reading, his delight in writing and his large share of mother wit..."
With this comment in mind, think back to your catechism. Here is an example where orthodoxy is paramount or the catechism is useless at best, and damaging at worst. But think about actually penetrating someone with the understanding of what is believed when a Christian proclaims the Creed, and you understand the daunting task at hand. Creating a work that has continuity, and if I may borrow an impression here, "graceful prose, easy conversation style," and quickly communicates the Love of God that the Author lives and understands, and you have a foundational perception of the first book in a series of four called, "What Christians Believe," by the Bishop, Kenneth Myers.
Taking the Apostle's and Nicene Creeds, linking the scriptural references, explaining their purpose within the Church, showing the meaning behind saying you `believe' this phrase and the development in history of the two pieces is a great foundation in orthodox, catholic Christianity. Just for the discussion of the terms `orthodox' and `catholic' the work is worth a protestant's price of admission. Lace this truth with the historical and anecdotal references included in Bp. Myers' book and you have a truly entertaining read. Churches could easily find this an excellent foundation in their catechetical material. If further release of the other 3 works that make up the series prove to be as enlightening, entertaining and accessible, then there may be a new batch of hearts, minds and souls into which more orthodox Christianity may be deposited.
In the end, the work is the true teaching of the Church. This Defender of the Faith is not looking to redefine any aspect of the truth handed down through out the centuries. He keeps it and preciously, lovingly passes it on so that others might learn or deepen their understanding. In the end I was reminded again of one of the article in "God in the Docks", by C.S. Lewis, "Our business is to present that which is timeless (the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow) in the particular language of our own age.... Your teaching must be timeless at its heart and wear a modern dress."
Congratulations, Bp. Meyers, you have achieved what Mr. Lewis has admonished. And the God and His Church is glorified. Get the book. Its great. Even if you think you already know it.

If You See Her Say Hello Apr 21, 2009
By Andrew Gage
"Ragamuffin priest"
Bob Dylan sings, "If You See Her Say Hello." This is where I have been in my experience and understanding of the Church over the past couple of years, mind you, after nearly 20 years of ministry in the Church(over 10 ordained). Since spending a couple of days with Bishop Myers and reading, "What Christians Believe" in the car between Sherman, Texas and Wilsonville, Alabama, "She," seemed closer. In almost 16 years of marriage this is only the second book my wife and I have read out loud together. Yes, out loud and together. Check it out...
