What Lucy Taught Us: A Management Fable about Improving Your Business One Process at a Time

As informative as it is instructive, What Lucy Taught Us: A Management Fable about Improving Your Business One Process at a Time by Walt Geer takes an original slant on the corporate world. In this entertaining fable, the author describes how a simple eight-step strategy can dramatically improve business processes. For a challenge, the parable’s protagonist, Joe, leaves a bright future to join AMD, a fledgling company. The new VP of operations, he inherits a dysfunctional staff and is subject to a barrage of consumer complaints. His strategy is simple: reestablish customer confidence. By studying the competition and gaining a competitive advantage, he is determined to distinguish AMD from its rivals and reestablish its dominance in the market. Finding it easier said than done, Joe enlists an old friend who leads him to consider the relevance of an “I Love Lucy” episode that transforms Joe’s understanding of how work gets done.

With internet, technology, social media and how they revolutionize the way we manage business dominating business headlines in the recent decade, we often forgot that the fundamental of a well run business is sound business process. What Lucy Taught Us is a timely, well written and easy to read book on the importance of focusing on business process improvement in order to reduce cost, improve customer and employee satisfaction, and ultimately business bottom line.
This is a book should be on the desk of every CEO and COO of any size company.

5Importance of Process at the Workplace  Jan 02, 2010
By Arthur S. Thompson
The timing and efficacy of this book should make an impact on a variety of business models based on the changing dynamic of this economy. "What Lucy has taught Us" has revealed an understandable and crisp style; an inertial effect of developing and maintaining effective business processes. The author "Walter Geer" creatively leverages a famous comedy episode as a parody of real world business scenarios. The author emphasizes process members' cognizance of all aspects of business process steps in order to make well informed efficiency recommendations and improvements. This model provides an easy to understand eight step process model which have taught me how to contemplate an effective strategy which involves documenting critical processes, procedures and expectations. I am planning to have our company commence review and consider the lessons learned from "What Lucy has taught Us". Our expectations involve helping our organization refine our current Business Process Model approaches. As a Software Design Organization we have an affinity and appreciation for business procedures and recognize the efficiency that can be gained by indoctrinating good business process approaches and tools as we endeavor to grow and scale in this competitive business climate.

5The Best Management Fable Ever!!!!!!!!!!!  Oct 25, 2009
By K. Reed
As a small business owner myself I have read many books and periodicals about different business concepts and techniques. WHAT LUCY TAUGHT US presented a simple yet completely different view on tackling management issues that could be applied to any organization large or small. The use of the Fable to illustrate the concept made the book a fun, enjoyable read. I would highly recommend this book to everyone especially business owners and upper level management who are looking to improve efficiency, productivity, and the all important bottom line. It's an eye-opener!!!

This is an excellent book for every manager, no matter being in a middle of the organizational hierarchy or looking the organization from the bird's eye. Something that we really easy forget that the connections between different departments are so important for the process efficiency. We have so many ways of communications these days but we forget to use them and align our actions. The way how we do things is the way how we are perceived by our customers, from whom we live and earn the profits.
I would suggest every one to read it, since I think it is easily applicable to the everyday life also.
