What Would You Do With This Room? My 10 Foolproof Commandments to Great Interior Design

Bold and manageable, Mark Lewison's What Would You Do With This Room? My 10 Foolproof Commandments to Great Interior Design, written by Sherri Houtz with John R. Haigh, is a gem of instruction to design types who have the heart to do-it-themselves, but need a little direction. In the case of this interior design book that blends common sense with savoir-faire, Mark's mantra is, "keep it simple, keep it simple, keep it simple!" It takes effort to execute design plans, but with these easy to use tools and insights designing rooms is a breeze. From keeping one's lifestyle in mind to following fashion, and from personalizing your home's look and feel to being fearless, this style guide is the perfect missive for new homebuyers and novice designers. First detailing each of his ten design commandments, Lewison follows by demonstrating how readers can synthesize the commandments to execute designs, making a room "pop" with fun and imagination.

1Poor design  Jul 19, 2009
I couldn't take the book seriously because the layout is poor. For a book on design they should have hired a designer to lay out the book.

4great interior design  Dec 21, 2008
this book is insightful and very helpful when it comes to making small and simple improvements to the home that can make a world of difference and gives advice for larger scale improvements as well.

5"Dear Mark,"  Dec 19, 2008
This book is a charming, irreverent primer for the new, (and not so new), DIY home decorator. Lewison's 10 Commandments from "Design for how you live," to "Don't forget your eyeliner!" will pave the way for just about anyone to create a better home.

My favorite part is the section entitled "Dear Mark... What would you do with this room?" Real people have sent in photos of real problem rooms and ask for advice. From "Holy CLUTTER! What's going on in here?" to "VOILA! All of your dark upholstered furniture is now a lofty looking off white!" Lewison imparts his tricks of the trade in lively, encouraging prescriptions.

Because remember:"The bottom line is that you want to look good in your own home."

5Inspiring!  Nov 24, 2008
Great book for practical ideas. I already knew some of the things I wanted to do in updating my home but this book gave me new concepts and a much better understanding in areas like lighting, color combinations, materials, etc. It's an easy read and the many pictures illustrate the concepts nicely.

5Excellent Book - A must read!  Nov 02, 2008
Interior Design is an art-form unto itself and this book takes the key principles that designers already know and applies them in ways that ANYONE can understand. Get this book and you will be able to start making improvements that you, previously, never thought possible. What Would You Do With This Room? is the next best thing to hiring an interior designer.....for a lot less! Highly recommended.
