What's Our Names?

Question: How does an old, shattered and tattered talkative guitar become best buddies with a whimsical, pudgy gourmet chef? Answer: Realizing that everyone has his or her own unique identity in this world. In other words, you don't have to look, act or be the same as others to be accepted by others. Within the early stages of growth, children need to be introduced to books, which include jovial characters and vivid illustrations, depicting harmony, respect and brotherhood towards others. This is the premise of Les Kraft's humorous children's book, "What's Our Names?" In his picture book, he's incorporated two, very different looking characters, who go about life in a fun-filled way. To further embellish their cheerful adventures, he structured the book in a manner that the text is actually a song (lyrics and sheet music included) which can be utilized in schools within a literacy reading program, to teach multi-cultural awareness or in a music program. Actually, this book was thirty-five years in the making. Mr. Kraft created 'Charley the Guitar' in 1970. While teaching music in an elementary school in Brooklyn, he utilized his guitar as a motivational device, using the guitar's sounds to represent his own voice while teaching children. Years later, as an Early Childhood School Administrator, Mr. Kraft gave demonstration cooking lessons to the first grade children in his school. He used both characters to instill kindness and friendship to the children in his school. Young children need to be motivated to learn how to read. Mr. Kraft's picture book "What's Our Names?" should provide that motivation.

This is a great book for parents and teachers to read to their children. The graphics are excellent and the CD is a plus.
This is a great introduction to lessons on differences amongst people, as well as, how we can all get along.
Don't be surprised if you find yourself humming the song to yourself after you listen to it.

What's Our Names is a colorful poetic musical romp through the world of the book's characters, Charley the guitar and Chef Karafe. The author, Mr. Kraft, takes you on an exciting journey seen through the eyes of Charley, the musician, and Chef Karafe, the cook. At the same time, children of all ages learn the importance of tolerance and acceptance of the differences among us. The uniqueness of the book's words is that they comprise the lyrics to a song, written by Mr. Kraft. Words and music are included on the last page of the book. The tune is SO catchy, that once the music is played, you will find yourself singing the song over and over again. There is no doubt that this book will be a welcomed addition to your child's bookcase, as well as to your own livingroom coffee table. In addition, the artistry of Mr. Cantirino is truly amazing.

As an educator for over thirty years, I found this book a truly wonderful combination of song, art and education. Mr. Kraft also makes a clear link to friendship and peoples' sameness through a beautifully illustrated work. The book would be a welcome addition to any read-aloud curriculum in schools or a mom whio just wants to see her son or daughter smile and learn
