i love this book it was compelling it grapped me from the first chapter! i love the part about the well.the other thing that got me was the chicken and how the author has a unique way of displaying symbolism throughout the whole book. I mean the book had everything in it, from humor to times i had to stop reading because it made me cry. i have a whole new outlook on life thanks to this book i appreciate life more. The author is new fresh and EXCITING!! Plus the best part was that it was an easy read i recommend everyone to read this book at least once. you will be very GLAD you did!!

5Wonderful and engrossing.  Feb 08, 2004

I didn't know what to think when I got a copy of this book, but once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. The trials of Ruthie and the way she overcomes them is inspiring. The fact that this book is based on a true story reminds us of how far things have come in the last 70 years. This is a must read for anyone wanting to get a look at life in the South during the first half of the 20th century, especially from the perspective of a young African-American girl.
