When I Was Ten

When I Was Ten is an autobiographical, bittersweet coming of age story based in the early 1960s. The reader follows the life of young Maureen Hurley over the course of her tenth year as she experiences a sexual transition from childhood to maturity. Though written with humor, the story tells of her tragic loss of innocence which leads to a rather bleak and desperate childhood.

I liked this book a lot. This 10 year old is mature beyond her years. It is well written, witty and humorous.

5Great reading  Dec 20, 2006
I met Maureen in high school but did not know she was such a good writer. I read this book and was blown away at how well written it is. Although I am a male I can relate to her ten year old life. Everyone has something in their past, either good or bad and she tells it like it is-no holds barred! I would recommend this book to anyone and can't wait till it's made into a movie. If Maureen writes another book about her life I will definitely buy it!! Good book 'Mo'!

5What a life!  Dec 12, 2006
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first received this book. The many public problems dealing with memoirs made me apprehensive. I opened the first page and was immediately transported into the mind of a ten year old. I laughed as she discovered what it meant to be a woman....and I even cried when she took those first steps to adulthood. Adolescence is a tough road to ride but with friends, faith, and Celery young Maureen finds the smooth parts through the potholes. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a witty and poignant piece about growing up.
