Heart-tugging, honest, witty. A must read! Oct 10, 2010
By D. Elizabeth Ms. Hurley is not only a wonderful English teacher, but a wonderful writer; this book shows a side of this woman that would rarely be seen in public, as well as the pure wit and humor her friends, family and students all enjoy. In this book, readers follow the story of young Maureen Hurley as she progresses from being a child to an adult. A very humorous book that deals with strength, courage and some very touchy subjects - When I Was Ten will tug at your heartstrings and make you remember what life is about. The story followed Maureen through her tenth year, a year we all come to know as a stepping stone for life later on, where she overcomes obsticles and deals with things most children shouldn't have to. Some subjects of the book are very raw, open, and if the pure honesty of the book itself is not enough to draw you in then the joking undertones surely will. One of the best books I've read in a long while, which I greatly recommend to anyone who can appreciate honest, rough, life-changing life stories that will haunt you for years afterward - When I Was Ten is a book you can definitely appreciate, if not love.
The female Holden Caulfield! Jul 07, 2010

If you're writing for children, this is a wonderful coming-of-age book to study; Ms. Hurley captures the stream-of-consciousness of a child of ten so perfectly that it's hard to remember that an adult's is the guiding hand (though the intensity of the wisdom reminds us).
If you were a military child, the book holds its own special language that you may well recognize and understand.
I think the world was waiting for the female Holden Caulfield -- and, this Maureen Hurley has something that he does not: better than the intermittent shade and comfort of which she speaks, the intermittent but ever-returning and unrelenting floods of faith, love, and hope in spite of it all.

By Thelma Knurn I liked this book a lot. This 10 year old is mature beyond her years. It is well written, witty and humorous.

By PGR I met Maureen in high school but did not know she was such a good writer. I read this book and was blown away at how well written it is. Although I am a male I can relate to her ten year old life. Everyone has something in their past, either good or bad and she tells it like it is-no holds barred! I would recommend this book to anyone and can't wait till it's made into a movie. If Maureen writes another book about her life I will definitely buy it!! Good book 'Mo'!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first received this book. The many public problems dealing with memoirs made me apprehensive. I opened the first page and was immediately transported into the mind of a ten year old. I laughed as she discovered what it meant to be a woman....and I even cried when she took those first steps to adulthood. Adolescence is a tough road to ride but with friends, faith, and Celery young Maureen finds the smooth parts through the potholes. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a witty and poignant piece about growing up.
