Dealing with loss. Nov 03, 2009
I fell in love with Eddie, the knight in shinning over-alls, who was the best monster fighting dad a kid could ever have. Marti gives us an insight into her early childhood, and the wonderful relationship she had with her father. How many dad's have the personal phone number of God's helper, the "Man in the Moon"? Marti always felt safe with her father by her side but somehow the word divorce changed all that.
Time moves on and Marti is married with children of her own. Happily she and Eddie renewed their close relationship. Life is good until Eddie remarries and the "Wicked Witch" enters the scene. She is always hovering in the background causing this reader to wonder about her intentions.
This book speaks of many losses. The pain and confusion of divorce, the difficulty of dealing with unwanted step-parents, and finally the death of a loved one. Marti knew Eddie had terminal cancer but was unable to accept it. She prays for a miracle, questions why God would do this to someone so special when there are evil people more deserving of this fate. The challenge of caring for a parent and not robbing them of their dignity is difficult. Marti and Eddie find clever ways to deal with this among many other problems.
Laugh a little, cry a lot, but read this book.
"When It's Time to Say Goodbye" Oct 19, 2009 What a Great Read! This book is funny, sad and a very heartwarming story about the challenges of life and the inevitable as we all go down our own Yellow Brick Roads. It is written as if Marti herself is sitting next to you. She instantly becomes your friend. This book made me laugh, cry and warmed my heart all at the same time. I really hope there will be other books to come because this is one author I am really excited to follow!
When its time to say Good Bye Oct 11, 2009 Boy, though I have cried through some of the part of the book I have read at this point, I need to keep reading because your thoughts and feeling are put into words that I have carried for such a long time in my mind with my dad but couldn't seem to say. Thank you for your book, the words, the thoughts, and your heart felt ways....God really broke the mold when he made you...
Birth is a terminal condition! Aug 04, 2009 Birth is a terminal condition. None of us gets out alive but we deny, struggle, ignore, get angry, get crazy, grieve when it happens to the people we love. Marti Tote's book is a candid, intimate exploration of human emotion with the death of her Dad. Her style of writing is very chatty and real. It is as if she were sitting on the sofa next to you telling her story. She reveals things few people have the courage to reveal, her most intimate feelings. You will get to know this lady in a way you rarely get to know anyone, even your spouse or your children, or your parents. You will learn many life lessons from this book. Probably the most important is that at the end of the day all we have are memories and our loved ones are always alive in those memories. I think this book should be recommended school reading. We get lessons in everything except what we really need to know........living and dying.
My book club read and reviewed this book and boy oh boy did it bring up life stories. Everyone's story is different and the same, the human condition.
When It's Time To Say Good-Bye Aug 01, 2009 Having lost both my parents and now my husband this book helped me validate my feelings. For some reason, most people will not talk about death and dying and how to talk with your loved ones that are dying. This book really helps. It makes it real and the people are real. That is very important. Normal people and circumstances.
