5The raw ground war in Vietnam  Apr 16, 2008
By Greg Rainwater
I know the author and this is the real deal straight out of the pages of his diary. He should have written this years ago but it is worth the wait.

4Innocence lost  Feb 14, 2011
By Bob Hoskins
I want to start out by thanking Vincent Carmack for his service and for writing down for the rest of us what war REALLY is about. Lost friends, lost youth, lost time, horror on a grand scale and lost innocence.

There's no fluff here. It's pure honesty as to what he saw and how he felt. Vincent's writing exposes him as a young man who had feelings and innocence as opposed to spit-shine gung-ho. He joined the Marines, he went to Vietnam and served 2 back to back tours. He saw horror, death and mutilation. He killed people. He questioned what he was doing and why he was doing it. Vincent admits he didn't understand why anyone was trying kill him or, conversely, why he was supposed to kill them as, neither knew the other. He admits to hate and anger towards the enemy after his friends got killed and he wanted revenge, LOTS of revenge.

It's all in this short work. The writing style is simple. There are many spelling and grammatical errors but, I told myself, this is taken directly from his diary written as a kid in S.E. Asia. In places it appears that you're reading a stream of consciousness as the thoughts dart about. I expect this is how combat would feel to one so young, bewildered and scared.

As one of the many Vietnam memoirs I've read, this one rates towards the top. I like his honesty, I like how it's all in his voice and I especially like his tenderness and articulation of his inner thoughts.

Vincent strikes me as a good, solid guy. He'd be honest if you wanted to talk to him about his time in country and I feel he'd be helped by talking.

I like the guy and again, I thank him for his service.

Good luck to you buddy.

5Excellent Book by a true hero... this should become a movie  Aug 27, 2009
By Tracee B Zubic
I first met Vince over 15 years ago via work. He's a truly wonderful person that experienced horrors beyond what any human should endure. He claims that I prodded him to write this book a long time ago although I am sure I am one of MANY people that tried (and luckily succeeded ) in convincing him to share his experiences in a book. I've always admired his courage and am so honored to not only have multiple copies of his book but to have them signed by Vince. His book is a MUST READ for anyone that thinks that War is a romantic notion without consequences. Vince speaks for so many soldiers that gave the ultimate sacrifice in a way that is brutally raw and painful yet it does offer hope as it also speaks to the goodness that also exists within humans. His story will grab you, shake you and obligate you to absorb it all in one sitting. Your respect for veterans will grow with each turned page. - Mike Z.- Independence, Ohio

4Riveting read  Feb 20, 2009
By Joyce
Nothing fancy, flowery or phoney in this authentic, raw account of an average person in a not-so-average world. Not just a story of wartimes, but also a glimpse of how the psychological effects of early childhood neglect and abuse affected the author's outlook on life and relationships and influenced the decisions he had to make in life and death situations. This little book has a huge story in it. I loved it and couldn't put it down.

5A Brutally Honest Vietnam Experince  Jul 02, 2008
By Woofbark... woof "Woof"
Special Forces Recon Radiomen lasted 6 months in the bush. Two years later 3 purple hearts.
"I was lucky because I was wounded over there and in a hospital for
a very long time, I had a chance to get my head on straight before
returning to the real world".(page 165)
White Hot And Red is the Vietnam lottery for wounds. Does your life bleed out onto the jungle floor or receive a seared steaming reprieve from death.
