2Greatly anticipated and greatly disappointing  Aug 09, 2009
By Old Kinderhook
I really looked forward to receiving this book because there is so little written on its subject matter. With the exception of Mary Seeley's fine book on White House Christmas cards and gifts, there is virtually nothing in print covering the various White House holiday collectibles. When the book arrived, I was quickly disappointed!

When the author states that, "We know that not all information is contained in this first attempt" he made a gross understatement!
The following is a brief review of each chapter.

1. WHITE HOUSE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS. 5 pages of pictures with no background info. There was not even a mention that the ornaments are sold by the White House Historical Society; no mention of issue prices and no statement that back issues are available for many years after issuance - all information of interest to the collector.

2. PRESIDENTIAL CHRISTMAS CARDS. This is where this book should have shined - if for no other reason than the fact that the subject has been covered so extensively by Mary Seeley. It is sadly lacking. For example - none of the highly popular gift prints distributed during the Eisenhower and kennedy Administrations are even mentioned, much less illustrated. Not one example of the myriad of small gifts given out by the various Presidents (paperweights, bookmarks, etc.) is mentioned or shown. There is even an erroneous statement that there exists only one 1963 JFK creche card with authentic autographs of the President and Mrs. Kennedy.

VICE PRESIDENTIAL AND OTHER CHRISTMAS CARDS. An incomplete listing without any explanatory text.

THE CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY. Another incomplete listing without any mention of size and number of pages.

WHITE HOUSE EASTER EGGS. Yet another incomplete listing! There is no discussion of the highly popular autographed eggs nor is there information about the glass eggs which were commercial items and not used in the Easter Egg Roll. Finally, there is no mention of the wooden eggs bearing stars which were sold by vendors rather than used in the Roll. All of this is basic information which beginning collectors would want to know.

Enough - I have made my point! I really am mindful of the difficulty of writing a collector's guide of first instance. I must add that Ed Krohn has done an admirable job of this with his books on Political convention tickets with attendant price Guide. However, I think that he should have waited until he accumulated more information before he published this book. When he does a second edition, it would also be helpful if he included an accurate price guide which is missing in this first edition.
