Why Chicken Nuggets Are Better Than Prozac: and Other Observations from an Over-Caffeinated Dad

Why is the morning drop-off so hard to get right? If you give your pre-schooler a time-out and then forget about him, does that make you a bad parent? What do you do if your kids reject your politics? If you’re like most parents, these are the things you deal with every day, trusting that between Oprah, the self-help section at the bookstore and the collective wisdom of other parents, you’ll be able to figure them all out — but not until after you run the kids to soccer, set up a couple of playdates, mediate an argument, break up a fight, drop a donation off for your school’s silent auction, double-check some fractions, proof-read an English paper, find a 3-ring binder for a History report, re-schedule the dentist, play hide ‘n’ seek, and try to get just a little more sleep than last night. (Though nowhere near as much sleep as when you were single.)

Start with "it's Never Too Early to teach Your Kids 'Tact' " and go to "When Pre-schoolers Learn to Rhyme" and you will get a flavor of this charming book of musings on raising children. Laughter will surprise you at every turn and irony is rampant. Fun to read at one sitting or to pick up for refreshment during a trying day.

5Calm down and enjoy a laugh  Jan 07, 2010

Humorist Kirk Enright writes with wit and verve about the minor irritations that parents encounter: how to teach tact to a four year old who spies a fat woman; how to reform the drop off system that awaits parents each day, or noting the worst places for children to have their meltdown. This slightly irreverent picture of parental bliss will put a smile on your face.
