Attaining Success from Inside Out - Wisdom from a Contemporary Master of Yoga Apr 05, 2010
By E. Glazier Regardless of our beliefs, tendencies toward virtue or vice, level of education, or economic status, some deep and subtle aspect of being wordlessly leads us toward goodness and happiness. Yet, few of us perceive such guidance, as we are typically scattered in the pursuit of desires or influenced by past experiences, religious dogma, or other limitations. Yogi Shanti Desai has devoted his life to a path of receptivity to inner guidance. In so doing, he has achieved true equanimity, material success, and the capacity to lead others to spiritual and worldly success. In his latest book, Wisdom for Living, Shanti inspires readers to attain life goals by systematically turning their attention toward the pure and peaceful consciousness that is at the root of all life in the universe. The message is not one of escape or intellectual stimulation. It is rather immediately practical and ultimately profound. Shanti recommends: accepting one's own nature and situation in life; maintaining responsibility for one's own duties; setting time aside each day for yogic breathing and other techniques that enable a slowing of the mind and a direct and immediate experience of internal peace and satisfaction; and retaining awareness of inner stillness throughout the day. He teaches that persistence on this simple path brings: love for one's self and others; affinity for virtue; lasting peace; and the health and clarity needed to succeed in life. Wisdom for Living is interspersed with quotes and storied lessons that can influence the seeker for a lifetime. Read and contemplate this text, and begin the practice in earnest. You will eventually detect a variety of improvements in every aspect of daily life. -Edward Glazier, Ph.D.
A true guide to sharing and giving "relief" to a weary world Aug 17, 2011
By Anne Marie Murphy I have learned only by repetition, experience and an open mind. WISDOM FOR LIVING by Yogi Shanti Desai offers me the opportunity to teach others of my friends and students the reason and cause for my joy. Shanti's own smile shines throught this book. One of the universal truths in this book is that one gives to others information like this: "Consciousness is bliss...when the mind dissolves..." I have been run by my thoughts for years until in the early 80's I met Yogi Shanti Desai. This book summarizes all my learning from him. How wonderful for all of you to be able to get that same learning that if practiced and taken to heart can relieve you of your worry, anxiety, fear, and guilt. I was trained in a Religion of guilt. But I have heard the music of Shanti's laughter and seen the rhapsody of his blissful tears expressed in this book. So what of Wisdom? Solomon asked for it and got it. For me, my whole life would have gone a different way without it. I wanted to quit my job teaching teens in a vocational school, but because I listened to Shanti, and followed true wisdom in myself, I stayed to learn the life lessons I needed. I never knew "Perfection is my basic nature". A simple statement like this can set you free from all striving for what? Where are we all going? Read this book and find the answer. A Lifetime of Experience for Sincere Spiritual Seekers Mar 15, 2010
By Gudjon Bergmann Are you a spiritual seeker? Then you will benefit immensely from the experience and condensed teachings of Yogi Shanti Desai, a veteran yogi, who has been practicing from the age of eight, and teaching for over forty years. "Wisdom for Living" covers the essence of all yoga literature and is offered with the attitude and experience of a man who has fulfilled all his earthly duties, attained spiritual wisdom and wants to serve those ready to hear his teachings.
"Wisdom for Living" starts with the simple message of acceptance. In sections one and two Yogi Shanti Desai urges the spiritual seeker to accept and love himself and discusses the importance of non-attachment, dynamism, the important effects of the company one keeps, or Satsang, and urges the practitioner to prepare for wisdom.
Section three of the book covers the essential yogic philosophy in simplified form with detailed and informative charts for deeper understanding. In section four the most important chapter focuses on the essential teaching of the Bhagavad-Gita, Yoga Sutras and other core yogic scriptures and explains their root meaning.
Yogi Shanti Desai's writings are condensed and not quite the eloquent prose one is accustomed to from Western writers on this subject. But the essence of his writings reflects a lifetime of practice, spiritual depth and an essential understanding so rarely found in today's world where many aspire to find real spiritual meaning in a weekend course instead of an extended practice. His message is direct and simple, although sometimes repetitive, and should open the reader to perennial spiritual truths.
I have been personally associated with Yogi Shanti Desai through the years and my review does reflect the impression his teachings have made on my life. For balance it should also be mentioned that I wrote a foreword for this book. None of that changes the fact that it is rare to find so much spiritually inspiring and enlightening material in newly written books, I know, having read my share through the years.
