Withstanding the Lie

Judicious and wise, Withstanding the Lie: A Self-Help Book by Roger L. Brewer and Nicole Brewer provides stark images of the modern world to highlight the continued backlash of bigotry and racism. Far from content, America’s schools, courts, and workplaces are often battlegrounds that foster strife, humiliation, and disgrace. Minorities continue to be excluded and denied simple rights based on their physical appearance, language, or origin. In seven chapters with subtitles such as “Know Harm, Know Foul” and “Liberating from the Illusion,” the authors examine the myths of acceptance and the dangers of hostility. A powerful blend of vignettes and firsthand anecdotes of race, ethnicity, and otherness prove a formidable defense to hegemony. As the authors break the barriers of stereotypes and what it truly means to be different, they demonstrate how transgressions meant to destroy victims have little power. The time for self-awareness and self-empowerment is now.

By J. Halibozek
Everyone can benefit by reading this book. This father-daughter writing team tackles the tough subject of bigotry in all its forms and teaches you simple techniques to rebuild your self-esteem. Although the subject matter is of a serious nature, there are parts of this book that had me laughing out loud. You will enjoy the stories and be sure to read the Final Offerings, its vitamin C for the spirit.

5Wonderful and different book  Oct 23, 2008
By N. HERRINGTON "avid reader"
This is a wonderful and different book. It handles the hard facts, roles, and lies that upset you most. It helps you to see yourself on the inside.
How to recognize a LIAR. A person who makes you feel bad from the inside. A lie is a lie "that disparaging statement made against me is a lie". and how to handle it.
As I quote the book "your liberation from your negative self judgement is dependent on your acceptance of the truth that no one, no matter who she or he is, is inferior to another and that all people who live and breathe are equal in value as human beings.

This book includes a wealth of knowledge concerning bigotry in all forms and how to fight it.It gives one the opportunity and means to examine himself and to honestly consider his own experiences and feelings. We are all guilty and we are all victims.
I wept for Roger in the restaurant and for Nichole on the playground.
It is truly a self help book.I found the recaps at the end of each chapter helpful. The self-assessment exercise in Appendix 1 was insightful and revealing.
No matter who you are, or think you are,you will benefit from reading this book. Thank you Roger and Nichole.I would recommend it to anyone who desires to improve his life and well being.

5Worth reading for anyone who feels they are a minority in their environment  Oct 06, 2008
By Midwest Book Review
The lie that everyone will accept you for who you are - a lie, that although inspiring, is still a lie. "Withstanding the Lie" is a collection of anecdotes, short fiction, essays, and other writings from the father daughter team of Roger & Nicole Brewer. Honest and upfront, their words tell people how the world is and inspires them deal with the harsh realities that life puts in front of them. "Withstanding the Lie" is worth reading for anyone who feels they are a minority in their environment.
