Great book for lovers of Tolkien-esque fantasy! Aug 27, 2009

What a great book! Picked this up on a whim (great title and cover, right?), and was pleasantly surprised. This is a typical "human meets barbarian meets elf meets dwarf and they all band together to fight a newly resurrected evil using some artifact" fantasy novel, but it's a good one.
The action is fast-paced, the characters well described with understandable motives, and the bad guy is truly nice and bad. The "good guys" have a great rapport, and their sense of humor is well developed. The story moves along quickly, without the droning monologues that you sometimes get from main characters as they describe their back-stories. Action sequences are very well written a la Salvatore, and one can make quite a few comparisons here to some of the Forgotten Realms novels. If you like those books, you'll definitely like this one.
The book ends at a natural stopping point, but it's clear there's a lot more story to tell (which I'd assume since it's part of an upcoming trilogy)! So go out and give it a try, and I suspect you'll be hooked like I am!
