5I love Eleanor and this book's a gem.  Aug 08, 2009
By L. Nelson "lee_ann92"
Moment of truth: I bought the book because I follow Eleanor and her "daddy", James Pearse Connelly, on Twitter. I bought the book to support the two, but I found a little gem that I've come to enjoy.

The book is very simple: on the left side of the page is the question "Where is the food bowl?" on the right side encourages the reader to draw the food bowl. The questions change with every turn of the page and the background to each illustration changes, same color palette is used consistently throughout the book and the image of Eleanor remains static in each picture.

When the book arrived and I saw that the story encourages the reader to draw in the book, I decided to cover the drawing side with clear shelving paper. I then handed the book with vis-a-vis markers (also known as overhead markers) and told one of my students to "draw away!". After they had, we washed the drawings off and handed it to the next eager student. The kids liked reading the simple story and responding to it with their own imagination. By the end of summer school, many students enjoyed the opportunity to respond to Eleanor's questions.

The book now has a permanent home in my "rainy day" stash. I can also seeing using this book as a building block to having students create their own interactive picture books.

It's a lovely book and I now have a copy in my personal collection for my own enjoyment.
